ਅਖਾਣ: ਅੰਬਾਂ ਦੀ ਭੁੱਖ ਅੰਬਾਕੜੀਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਨਹੀਂ ਲਹਿੰਦੀ॥
Akhan: Amban Di Bhukh Ambakdiyan Nal Nahi Lahindi
ਅਰਥ: ਜਦ ਕੋਈ ਚਾਹਵਾਨ ਤੇ ਲੋੜਵੰਦ ਹੋਵੇ ਕਿਸੇ ਚੰਗੀ ਚੋਖੀ ਵਧੀਆ ਸ਼ੈ ਦਾ ਤੇ ਉਹਨੂੰ ਉਸੇ ਸ਼ੈ ਵਰਗੀ ਪਰ ਘਟੀਆ ਤੇ ਨਿਕੰਮੀ ਸ਼ੈ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਗਲੋਂ ਲਾਹੁਣ ਦਾ ਜਤਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਜਾਵੇ ।
Literal Translation: Hunger for mangoes is not satisfied with mango seeds.
Meaning (English): You cannot satisfy a desire with an inferior substitute.
English Equivalent: You can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear.
