ਅਖਾਣ: ਜਿੱਥੇ ਰੁੱਖ ਨਹੀਂ, ਓਥੇ ਅਰਿੰਡ ਪਰਧਾਨ॥
Akhan: Jithe Rukh Nahi, Othe Arind Pardhaan
ਅਰਥ: ਜਿੱਥੇ ਚੰਗੇ ਗੁਣੀ ਬੰਦਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਘਾਟ ਹੋਵੇ, ਓਥੇ ਮਮੂਲੀ ਯੋਗਤਾ ਵਾਲੇ ਵੱਡੇ ਬਣ ਬਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ।
Literal Translation: Where there is no tree, castor rules.
Meaning (English): In absence of the best, the mediocre prevails.
English Equivalent: When the cat’s away, the mice will play.
